Enhancing Road Maintenance with AI: UPI Cibiru Research Team Shines at AILCD 2025

Kitakyushu, Japan – The 13th International Conference of the Asian Institute of Low Carbon Design (AILCD 2025) was                  successfully held from February 21 to 24, 2025, in Kitakyushu, Japan. This prestigious event brought together researchers,            academicians, and industry experts to explore the theme “Grasping Architecture Intelligence Possibilities.” Among the            distinguished participants was a research team from the Computer Engineering Study Program, Universitas Pendidikan        Indonesia (UPI) Cibiru, which made an outstanding contribution to the conference.

The research team, led by Dr. Eng. Munawir, S.Kom., M.T., comprised Muhammad Salam Pararta (Student), Wirmanto         Suteddy, S.T., M.T. (Lecturer, Computer Engineering UPI Cibiru), Muhammad Taufik Dwi Putra, S.Tr.Kom., M.T.I.                 (Lecturer, Computer Engineering UPI Cibiru), Dr. Eng. Donny Koeniawan (Associate Professor, Institut Teknologi               Bandung), and Professor Bart Dewancker (Kitakyushu University, Japan). Their research, titled “Enhancing Road                 Maintenance Strategies in Bandung City Through YOLO and CNN-Based Damage Detection,” showcased an innovative       approach to utilizing artificial intelligence for urban infrastructure improvements.

During the conference, Muhammad Salam Pararta, a student member of the research team, had the honor of presenting         their findings. He was accompanied by the principal investigator, Dr. Eng. Munawir, S.Kom., M.T. His presentation                     captivated the audience, demonstrating how deep learning techniques such as YOLO (You Only Look Once) and                       Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) can significantly enhance road maintenance by enabling accurate and automated damage detection.

Their impactful research and exceptional presentation skills earned Muhammad Salam Pararta the prestigious ‘Best Presenter’ award at AILCD 2025. This remarkable achievement is a source of immense pride for Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI), particularly the Computer Engineering Program at UPI Cibiru, as well as the entire research team.
